Just call me Sally Flowerseed—having a great time considering which fast-blooming annuals to order by teh pound to scatter in every bare spot I can find. Flowerbeds, natch, and along teh dirt road.
Going for big color visible from a distance. Which means the pale blue globe gilia I and the bees love probably isn’t a contender, except for a patch by the path I walk a dozen times a day.
So far on teh list, I’ve got Shirley poppies (scattered some seeds last winter, had great poppies last summer), blue bachelor buttons (ditto), and vivid pink catchfly (Silene armeria) on the list. Gonna take a chance on California poppies, too, though they take longer to get their act in gear; shoulda planted em last fall.
Will be transplanting some perennial spreading pink primroses from garden down in town, too, come spring, but those’ll go in flowerbed just in case they take it in their heads to run wild. Don’t want to crowd out any of my wild friends already here.
Growing season is so short that zinnias are iffy and cosmos ain’t gonna make it to bloom time. Plus, not planning to water, so these guys gotta get a running start with last of snowmelt in, uh, May, and then they’re on their own in what are generally desert conditions. That means no larkspur
Native wildflowers here are great, of course, but, man, I’m hankering for a big gaudy splash of color. Maybe it’s because I’ve had spring fever since Christmas lol. And no way to start seeds in teh house; temp is far too variable and sometimes we’re not here to tend the stove (nothing sadder than frozen seedlings that are all my fault because I coaxed them into sprouting).
Now all that’s left to do is to find teh best deal. Have had great, reasonably priced bulk seed in years past from American Meadows and Wildseed Farms and Outside Pride.
Oh boy! Shopping! Oh boy, oh boy, FLOWERS!

Spring fever since Christmas??? uh huh.
This has been going on since… well… about June, as I recall.
FINE. Okay, so it’s neverending.
Even in an inhospitable wasteland where teh only flowers that grow are zillions of blue & purple penstemons of 5 different kinds and orange wallflowers and red paintbrush and golden banner peas and lavender erigeron and fuchsia (and white!!!) shooting stars and those giant white evening primroses and that wild candytuft stuff and black-eyed susans and gaillardia and lovely mariposas and beebalm and and and.. oh yeah, them fuzzy purple things that bloom in snow. Which is around, what, 9 months outta teh year?
Oh yeah, and teh wild orchids.
FINE. A girl can dream, dammit.
